Project Space Mural 2015 (Final Video!)

Aloha Friends!

After much editing the 2015 Salem Art Association Project space timelapse mural video is finally finished. I am very pleased with how this turned out this year and as always am very thankful to be invited back to paint and be in such an awesome space. I painted this in June and was allowed full studio access which allowed me to paint longer and try new things. Here is the video of what I made, spanning over six days. Mahalo for looking!

Holoholo video:

Artist Statement for the Salem Art Association's 2015 Project Space:

"The Hawaiian word Holoholo can have several meanings. First,it can mean to walk aimlessly or go for a stroll, allowing your feet to lead you and thus letting your mind be free. It also can mean to go for a ride, to drive aimlessly without a set route, letting the journey be the destination. To holoholo is to be free.

Since moving to Hawaii several years ago I often find myself wandering, no longer a resident of Oregon the state of my birth, but also not fully accepted as a resident of my new state either. I am constantly crossing oceans to find new places and seek a sense of belonging.

Holoholo is also very fitting for how I choose to paint the gallery space. Instead of painting one portrait or one static image I instead paint continuously for several days. I film myself painting and afterwards compress the film into a few short minutes. These moving images allow me to better express my travels, my wanderlust and to fully explore what it means to holoholo. The painting is the journey, not the destination."

The imagery for this mural is influenced by the most recent places I have traveled and specifically the connection to the natural landscape as I experienced it in each place.

Composite image of days one through six:

Six straight days of re-painting! Woot!

For this work I will include Hawaii (where I live, therefore it is always my starting point as long as reside there), Japan, England and Australia. I am including these locations because they represent me as a resident, tourist and artist and are the places I will have traveled to and from in 2015. I will end the mural with Oregon imagery since it will have been, up to that moment, my last travel destination.

Project Space Mural 2015 (Day Three)

Aloha Friends!

Day three was another long day and I am starting to feel a little worn out. Luckily for me I had some lovely people stop by and visit which makes the day all the more enjoyable and I don't end up just talking to myself. I am happy to say I visited Japan in today's mural and it brought back all kinds of beautiful memories. Tomorrow my imagery will be heading to England and I am very excited to see what happens. Thanks for looking! Be sure to check back soon for the final video!

"Sea Birds" (Large Wall Time Lapse Video)

This project was done as a part of the Salem Art Association's Annual Project Space.

It is titled "Sea Birds" because it is the first in a series. This time lapse mural series is about my experience living and working in Hawaii and Oregon. I travel frequently and am fortunate enough to always be near an ocean. My deep love of and connection to the sea and the sky promoted and influenced the imagery in these videos.

Project Space Mural 2014 (Day Ten) Small Wall

Aloha Friends!

If you recall I not only had a 30ft wall to paint on but a smaller 15ft wall. This wall did not change in time lapse fashion like the large wall but was a fun experiment in spontaneous painting, (i.e. not planning ahead just painting whatever came to mind). Overall I am pretty pleased with how this turned out. Special thanks to my best friend Gretchen Light who helped repaint a lot of the white areas! Mahalo lady! You are the best!

Project Space Mural 2014 (Day Ten)

Aloha Friends!

Wow! It has been quite the journey getting all this together in such a short time. As you may know the mural is done and the opening was a lovely success. I got to see a lot of my artist friends in Salem and meet a whole bunch of new people. Mahalo to everyone for coming!

There are the last photos of the large wall. I am still working on the time lapse video and will post that asap. You might be asking, "why is the video taking so long, don't you just have to speed things up and it's pau?" Well, I could do that, but there are moments were I am moving a ladder or backing up to look at the work or speaking with someone and if I just speed things up it makes the flow of the video feel very jerky. So I am taking some time to cut those bits out so the video is smoother and a bit shorter. Mahalo for everyone's patience. Till then please enjoy the final photos!

Project Space Mural 2014 (Day Four)

Aloha Friends!

Whew! Today was a challenge! For a minute there I wasn't sure I was going to be able to do a complete scene change. I have family coming into town tonight so my day ended up being a bit shorter than expected. But no worries! A few eyeballs, a few clouds and one volcano later we are done with day four! Cheehoo!

Project Space Mural 2014 (Day Two)

Aloha Friends!

Today is day two of my Salem Oregon, Project Space Mural! I am very excited to see how things are starting to transition from one image to the next organically. After all is said and done there will be a time lapse video that shows the process. Check back in a few weeks to see the final product! Till then I will keep posting in-process photos and, as always, suggestions are always welcome. My theme has to do with the ocean and more specifically my movement between Oregon and Hawaii. If you think of some imagery or a story I should add, please leave me a comment! Mahalo!
