HAIS Schools of the Future Conference IPA Student Showcase (Timelapse Mural Video!)

Aloha Everyone!

I am super excited to share my experience at the HAIS 2015 Schools of the Future Conference. This was my first conference as a participant and it turned out so well! I don't think things could have gone any smoother and my students from Island Pacific Academy did an amazing job!

Let me tell you a little about it!

About our project:

Title: It's Not About The Destination, It's The Journey!

Description:
Through the integration of physical art and technology see first hand how the process becomes the journey. Students will demonstrate the creation of an on-sight mural which, through technology help to create a time-lapse video. Visit with the students and teacher and see how learning accelerates and is internalized when your school community isn't focused just on the grades.

About SOTF:

The annual Schools of the Future Conference is the largest professional development gathering of public and private K-12 educators in Hawaii and brings together teachers and administrators from Hawaii’s public, private, charter and parochial schools as they focus on how to best transform our existing schools and create new learning environments for the 21st Century.

This collaborative event is presented by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS), the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) and the Hawaii Community Foundation in partnership with the Pillars of Peace Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation and the Hawaii Society for Technology in Education to highlight the best practices that are taking place in our learning environments today and being planned for those of tomorrow.

These pictures don't do justice to how many people were actually there, over 1,500 conference attendees! The largest attendance yet! The girls did an amazing job painting and thinking on their feet to answer everyone's questions! Fantastic job ladies!

Big Mahalo to Elizabeth, Rylyne and Jess!

Love/PRIDE Mural at Ong King Hawaii

Aloha Friends,

This mural took place over three days and was commissioned for Ong King's June 2015 Pride celebration.  I am so very honored to be invited to paint this mural because gay pride and LGBTIQ+ rights are something I feel very passionately about. Love is love. Period. Painting this mural allows me to be an ally and an artist at the same time!

ONG KING Arts Center's mission is to make a sustainable art community. It is a space for creative risk taking, and artistic mastery located in downtown chinatown, Honolulu, Hawaii.

A sustainable art community, exits in mutual support and inspiration of all involved. It depends upon the innovation of the art, the artist, and its positive effect on the community. The ability of the artist to take a chance on learning, or discovering something new, creates a constant cycle of teaching and learning. Every moment at Ong King is a stop in the cycle. Performances reveal work, classes provide guidance, and the space is electrified with growth. Here one can both become humble and try something new, and/or attain new levels of artistic mastery through practice and criticism.

Mahalo for looking! I am going to be painting a few more murals for Ong King in the future so if you have any suggestions or stories to share I'd love to hear it! Write me a comment or send me a message! Mahalo!

"Sea Birds" (Large Wall Time Lapse Video)

This project was done as a part of the Salem Art Association's Annual Project Space.

It is titled "Sea Birds" because it is the first in a series. This time lapse mural series is about my experience living and working in Hawaii and Oregon. I travel frequently and am fortunate enough to always be near an ocean. My deep love of and connection to the sea and the sky promoted and influenced the imagery in these videos.

HFD Fire Prevention Week 2014 Mural

Aloha Friends!

I had to take a quick film editing break today work on the Honolulu Fire Department's 2nd annual Mural Painting Event! This year's Fire Prevention Week 2014 Theme: "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!" The murals will be on view at firehouses island wide during Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-11. I was lucky enough to once again work with my friend and fellow painter Jessica Orfe and also got to meet a new friend Michy Moody. What a lovely (and hot!) day it was today. It's always good to see the community come together to make something new and, in this case, educational! Bonus!

Check out the photos below of the two panels we got to work on:

Project Space 2014!

Aloha Friends!

I am very excited to announce that I'll once again be involved with Salem, Oregon's annual Project Space (Hosted by the Salem Art Association). The first time I worked with Project Space was in 2012 and I am happy to be asked back. I have been working on some ideas for a new series of murals that double as time lapse videos. I did some time lapse painting in 2010 with the Honolulu Museum of Art as their artist in residence and am excited to try an even larger scale project in 2014!

Here is the official Project Space Description from the Salem Art Association:

"Project Space is a dynamic (June to August) contemporary art opportunity. Taking place in downtown Salem, Oregon, Project Space offers juried exhibits by regional artists, studio space, in addition to performances and other events that encourage community dialogue.

Project Space is designed to bring out the experimental, the creative, the unexpected, the large, the small, the moveable and moving; embracing new avenues of expression.
Artists working in any media, including, but not limited to painting, sculpture, video, interactive media, installation, photography, performance, theater, sound and music, movement and dance are invited to apply to participate in the program. Approaches are fantastical, practical, high-tech, low-tech, humorous and serious. Exhibits rotate several times over the two-to-three month period, starting in June and ending in August. The specific schedule will be organized around the requirements of proposals chosen."
If you are interested in volunteering or getting involved visit their website for more information!

Here are a few pictures of the space I'll be working in:

I am busy working on the plans for the series of murals I plan to paint there (so check back soon!) But until then here are some videos of my experience as Artist in Residence at the Honolulu Museum of Art in 2010.

The Recycled Rain Project 2014

Aloha Friends!

I am pleased to say that I have been selected to be one of the artists participating in the Recycled Rain Project in Portland, OR! This will be the second year I have been involved with the Recycled Rain Project and I am stocked to be working with them again, even from a distance!

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The Recycled Rain Project was founded to help bring awareness to local artists and the various water issues facing both our state and other’s abroad.

The Third Annual Recycled Rain Show will take place on May 10th 2014 at the Olympic Mills Gallery in Portland, Oregon. All juried artists will create original works with collected rainwater. While the subject matter in the paintings is varied, the over all concept is to bring to light simple ways that we can rethink the way we use water.

As part of the exhibit we will also highlight everyday things that individuals can do to make a difference. A portion of the sale of any works are donated to a water-based charity. We hope to do our small part to start a greater movement to help other’s realize what a precious commodity we have and ways that individuals can help make a difference here and abroad.

In our second cycle, we were able to add a children’s component to RR with the addition of RAINDROPS – a children’s gallery.  We are excited to say that we will be doing this again to help educate children on the environment and bring them closer to art!

This year we are excited to expand to add Featured Artists along with the Open Call portion of the show. These Featured artists are working artists in the Portland Area that have demonstrated a dedication to the environment as well as their profession.

New Facebook Page!

Aloha Friends!

I have been asked a lot over the past year if I have a Facebook fan page. Alas, I did not. My fine art and my new business are online but not on Facebook. Well after a long wait (for no other reason other than I am lazy) I finally caved and made a Facebook page for my new art adventure Sunday Stingray!

www.facebook.com/sundaystingray

Please feel free to "like," or follow or share or whatever you feel! I am happy to be able to connect to so many lovely people.

That's it! Updates are Sundays and Wednesdays, until then enjoy my photos from Oahu and Kao'olawe with the Sunday Stingray logo rough draft. (And now we return you to your regular scheduled programming) Mahalo!

Sunday Stingray in the Studio!

Aloha Friends!

I have been working in the screen printing studio a lot recently and I have compiled a little video of some of the work I've been doing. I have completed the Aloha print which compliments/completes the Hawaiian Days of the Week Print Series and I will be posting images of those completed prints soon. Until then enjoy a little art montage to the sweet sounds of Daniel Ho.

Plus here are a few shots from inside the studio! Happy Sunday!
